PLASTIC-FREE WATER TABLE IKEA HACK
THE EASIEST (ECO-FRIENDLY) SUMMER DIY EVER
June 4, 2019
The key to reducing waste is limiting your possessions to things that can be used more than once. So my mind was completely blown when a mama friend of mine showed me this amazing IKEA water table hack. I have never invested in a water table for my little because...plastic toy trash......NOPE. But this has seriously got to be the easiest and most elegant DIY I've ever seen, plus these two things can be disassembled and re-purposed into grown people things in literally 2 seconds. You LITERALLY only need two thumbs (if that) and $36.
HOW IT WORKS
1.
get this Askholmen flower box from IKEA-- $30
2.
get this Algot storage box from IKEA-- $6
UPDATE:
IKEA has discontinued this bin :(
Here's what I have found that *might* work--the dimensions are roughly correct but I haven't tried it so not 100% sure it will work!
Click HERE to see it on the Container Store site.
3.
put the bin in the box et voila!
BUT THE BEST PART?
When it gets too cold for water play, this flower box goes right back to being a flower box!!! Now THAT'S a hard-working toy!
MORE THAN JUST WATER
There are so many options for what you can put in this container, you can also turn your water table into a sensory experiences! Since the top is detachable you don't have to worry about messy stuff because you can just rinse it out. Can't do that with a store-bought table that's for sure!
WATER BEADS
Water beads are non-toxic and biodegradable, so you can just dump them in your garden when you're finished. FIND THEM HERE
SPAGHETTI "WORMS"
Spare the real earthworms (our soil needs them!) and make some colorful imposters. Great for sensory play and slightly less squirmy. TUTORIAL HERE
That's all I got for today! If you have any other suggestions I should add here, SEND ME A NOTE!
