BABY GIRL FIRST BIRTHDAY PHOTOS
January 11, 2019
Your baby is turning 1. GRAB THE CAMERA!!!
Getting the feels when your baby turns one...it's a thing. And it hit me so hard. I worked full time, at an office that took me an hour to get to, during Beya's first year. It was awful, and when she turned one I was totally racked with guilt that I had missed so much, and she was not "officially" a baby anymore. But one of my biggest regrets is that, as oft-photographed as she is, I never memorialized her with an "official" first birthday shoot.
DIY OR PHOTOGRAPHER?
There is zero reason why you can't take your own one year old milestone portraits yourself. With the right light, a few easy to assemble backdrops, and your adorable bébé...you too can have professional-looking photos. You don't need a fancy camera, either, these days smart phones have pretty powerful lenses on them and photo apps can make a world of difference to the tone and feel of your images. My current favorite apps are Snapseed and A Color Story, and you can find a great phono-photo editing tutorial HERE
BUT WHERE? HOW?!
There is actually only one hard and fast rule, which is USE NATURAL LIGHT! The best time to shoot outdoors is early morning, when the shadows are soft and warm. Later in the day cameras tend to see more blue, so the longer you wait to take pictures the more you'll struggle to capture accurate colors. If you are shooting indoors, north-facing windows provide the softest/most diffused light. If you don't have one of those, just make sure you don't have any harsh rays coming directly through the window that will throw off your exposure. Read on to see some of our favorite ways to "fake" what the pros do...
WHY NOT "STAGE" A PARTY?
There is definitely a tendency to spend a lot of time on Pinterest and overwhelm yourself with options, but as long as you have good light in your home you don't need to go over the top and book a location. Have a "fake" first birthday party in your kitchen!
This macrame wall hanging is perfection and has transformed this simple kitchen into a Boho-chic photo studio. You can find tons of gorgeous backdrops HERE, or you can DIY one!

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX...ER, BASIN
I LOVE the wash-tub portrait trend and your one-year-old is the perfect size to fit into a mini-basin. Fill it with milk and flower petals for the sweetest look ever! MORE INSPIRATION HERE
GET OUTSIDE!
One awesome thing about babies is that they don't really need much accessorizing to look gorgeous. and mother nature is the best backdrop anyway, no?
Make your girl a daisy crown, grab a favorite stuffed animal, and hit your slacker neighbor's overgrown yard! HA! Shoot on an overcast day, or very early in the morning to get this soft, glow-y look.
Hopefully I've given you some good ideas to do this yourself--you CAN do it with a little creativity! And if you want some more ideas for cute photo shoots....
